What is a Parent Community Network? Most parents have the same concerns, need the same information, and appreciate the support of other parents. They understand the need for prevention, as it relates to a wide range of problems and issues youth face today. The Parent Community Network is an informal systems created by parents to provide information, education and support for parents. It is meant to support parents in helping their children confronting important issues they face, such as alcohol and other drug use, violence or bullying, early sexual activity and many others. Parents are the most effective prevention tool, especially when they communicate with other parents about such issues as safety and supervision.
What a Parent Community Network is NOT? This is not a vigilante, prohibition or negative effort. Parents are encouraged to use “positive prevention” methods.
What Do Parents in a Network Do? As each community’s network functions differently, some possibilities are: hold monthly meetings for support, education and informational sharing co-sponsor safe, chemically free activities for youth sponsor parent education programs set up parent resource centers work with schools, city councils, law enforcement, churches and youth to promote a healthier community environment publish pertinent parenting and prevention information cooperate and collaborate with The minor League teams which are active in each school district, county wide.
